Our verdict

HardDriverz is a free single-player kart racer made by students at SMU Guildhall during a 12-week team project. Steam lists it as single-player only, so plan on racing computer opponents rather than friends.

Its six tracks twist and defy gravity, and each sits in one of three themes recreated inside a packed stadium: the iridescent roads of Disc Drive, the sandy dunes of Android Arena and Circuit City, a neon city inside a computer.

The part to enjoy is building your kart. Wheels, spoiler and engine each change acceleration, handling and weight, the developers count more than a hundred combinations, and you can recolour both kart and driver. Six pick-ups, including shields, speed boosts and a tractor beam that pulls you towards a rival ahead, can swing a race.

Check your hardware first. The minimum specification asks for 16 GB of RAM and a GTX 1050 graphics card with DirectX 12, although the developers note that Low settings run on older machines, including recent integrated graphics. Steam lists full controller support, and Valve has not rated it for Steam Deck.

As a student project it is short, and there are no update announcements on its Steam page. It costs nothing, though, and suits a solo player who likes tuning a kart between races. If you want to play with friends, Nitro Battle Racing and HaberDashers are the free student-made alternatives with split-screen.

Based on the documented features of the PC version, not a hands-on review or score.
