Our verdict

Nitro Battle Racing is a free student game from DigiPen Institute of Technology, and it covers the basics of a couch racer. Up to four people can race in split-screen on one PC, or you can race alone against computer opponents at three difficulty levels.

Its main idea is the drift ability you take into a race. You choose one of three: a Gatling Gun for attacking, a Repair Tool for defence, or a Drift Boost for pure speed. On top of that come more than nine random power-ups, including a Rocket Booster that can carry you towards the front of the pack, and twelve karts with their own stats. Six stages, from deserts to a neon cyberspace and Mars, unlock as you reach goals.

Steam lists full controller support and recommends a gamepad. There is no online mode. Remote Play Together is listed, which streams a local session to friends elsewhere instead of offering online races.

Keep expectations in proportion. The store page says it was made as a student project for educational purposes, and it does not mention planned updates, so judge it on what is there now. Valve has not rated it for Steam Deck, and the minimum specification lists a GTX 960 graphics card and 4 GB of RAM.

For a free four-player session it sits alongside Kart Attack. For more content and online racing, SuperTuxKart remains the bigger free game.

Based on the documented features of the PC version, not a hands-on review or score.
