Our verdict
SuperTuxKart is the clearest free starting point in this catalog. It costs nothing, carries no active advertising or microtransactions, and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with mobile versions too. According to its FAQ, the project as it exists today has been in development since 2006.
There is plenty to do alone. Story Mode strings together races, time trials and Grand Prix challenges that unlock tracks, and Time Trial removes power-ups for players who want to learn a course. With friends, up to eight people can play on one computer, and the activities go beyond racing: battle, soccer, egg hunt and follow-the-leader modes are included. Online racing needs an STK account created inside the game.
Input is flexible. The official FAQ treats keyboard, gamepad and racing wheel as normal ways to play, and players can share one keyboard with separate key bindings, although many keyboards miss some simultaneous key presses.
Two things to know. Some new tracks reach donors first as part of a gift package before a wider release, and SuperTuxKart Evolution, the next major version, had no public test builds when we checked. Download the stable release, 1.5 at the time of checking, from the official site or its itch.io page.
