Our verdict

Disney Speedstorm is free to download, and that is both its appeal and its main condition. Racers come from Disney and Pixar films and series, each with character-specific skills, and progression comes from upgrading racers over time. New racers, tracks and seasonal content are added regularly.

For playing with others, the PC version supports online multiplayer with cross-play, and Local Freeplay is its split-screen mode: Xbox's launch announcement put it at up to four players on Windows PC. Local Freeplay is also the only mode that works offline; Gameloft's support FAQ says the other modes need an internet connection. That matters if you want to race alone on a train or with a weak connection.

The payment model is the part to weigh. The official website states that the game contains in-app purchases, including paid random items, and a free download does not mean every racer is available straight away. If you want a free kart racer without any shop, SuperTuxKart and Nightmare Kart are the alternatives in this catalog. If you are happy to work through a progression system with familiar characters, Speedstorm gives you a large licensed cast and regular updates at no upfront cost.

Valve rates it Verified for Steam Deck, and Steam lists full controller support.

Based on the documented features of the PC version, not a hands-on review or score.

How Wildlap compares

Speedstorm grows through seasons and in-game purchases. Wildlap's progression is a garage where coins earned in races go into your kart's performance and look; its price and release date have not been announced.

We make Wildlap. It is a PC kart racer in development, without a release date or public demo yet.
