KART RACER ON PC / RELEASED

Kart Attack

A free local split-screen kart racer made by a class of game-development students, with characters and tracks from the games they built and room for four players.

  • Free
  • 4 local players

Our verdict

Kart Attack is a small free game with an unusual origin. A class of game-development students who graduated during the COVID-19 pandemic made it to end their studies, bringing in characters and tracks from the games they had built along the way. That explains the cast, which includes a failed hot dog that fires ketchup and two people relaxing in a recliner.

It is a local game. You and up to three friends, or computer-controlled racers if you prefer, play in split-screen, each kart has its own special ability, and there is a tournament mode. No online play is listed.

Being free removes the risk of trying it, but set your expectations accordingly. Steam lists partial controller support and recommends a gamepad, naming Xbox, Switch and PlayStation controllers, and Valve has not rated it for Steam Deck. The store page does not mention planned updates.

For a free kart racer with more modes, online play and a long development history, SuperTuxKart is the stronger option. Kart Attack is worth a download for a quick, light-hearted couch session with friends.

Based on the documented features of the PC version, not a hands-on review or score.
