KART RACER ON PC / EARLY ACCESS
A retro kart racer in Early Access that mixes flat 16-bit style tracks with low-poly 64-bit style tracks, stars characters from other indie games and supports split-screen for two to four players.
Super Indie Karts is a tribute to the kart racers of the 1990s. It offers two visual styles, flat 16-bit Super tracks and low-poly 64-bit Ultra tracks, and its roster borrows characters from indie games such as Freedom Planet, Runbow, Mutant Mudds, Teslagrad and ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove.
There is a lot of track content. At the time of checking, the Steam page listed 48 tracks across four speed classes plus a mirror mode, more than 30 characters, and modes including Grand Prix, time trials, quick races, Mission Mania and nine battle arenas. Two to four players can play in split-screen; no online play is listed.
It has been in Early Access since 2015, and the store page still describes more tracks and features as coming. Buy it for what is available today rather than for the promised additions.
On the practical side, it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, has full controller support, and Valve rates it Verified for Steam Deck. For a free alternative that also runs on all three systems, see SuperTuxKart; for a modern indie racer with online play, see The Karters 2.
