Our verdict

The Karters 2 is aimed at players who want depth and community content from a kart racer. Its Steam page lists split-screen for up to six players, more than the four that most character racers allow, plus online racing on dedicated servers and split-screen online, so a couch group can enter online races together. Team-versus-team racing works both locally and online.

For solo play there is a challenge campaign, cups of up to 24 rounds, time trials and ghost racing. Seven modes are listed in total, including battle and elimination variants, and Steam Workshop support adds community-made tracks and characters, which gives the game a longer life than its official content alone.

The trade-off is Early Access. At the time of checking, the full Story Mode and the built-in track editor were still listed as planned features. The current challenge campaign is not that Story Mode, so judge the game on what is available today rather than on the roadmap.

The minimum PC specification is modest, and an internet connection is needed only for online features. Valve rates it Playable on Steam Deck. If you want to try kart racing with this many local players without paying, SuperTuxKart supports up to eight on one computer.

Based on the documented features of the PC version, not a hands-on review or score.

Good for

  • Groups of five or six on one PC
  • Couch groups who want to race online together
  • Fans of community tracks and mods

How Wildlap compares

The Karters 2 focuses on competitive depth and community mods. Wildlap is a smaller original game in development, with single-player racing and local split-screen planned for PC and a garage for upgrades and styling.

We make Wildlap. It is a PC kart racer in development, without a release date or public demo yet.
