Our verdict
Team Sonic Racing is the pick for groups who would rather help each other than race purely for themselves. Teammates can share items and give each other boosts, and team modes score the result for the whole team, so a slower player still contributes to the outcome. The 15 characters come in three types, Speed, Technique and Power, which gives each racer a different role.
Team Adventure is a story mode that introduces these systems through a series of events. The PC manual also documents Time Trial, vehicle customization and difficulty settings for solo play, and online races hold up to 12 players.
The important restriction is local play. The PC manual allows four players in split-screen for Grand Prix and Exhibition, but only three in Team Adventure, so a group of four should plan to race together rather than play the story. Each local player needs their own controller.
One more practical point: Valve currently rates Team Sonic Racing as Unsupported on Steam Deck. If you plan to play on a Deck rather than a Windows PC, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed are both rated Verified.
Based on the documented features of the PC version, not a hands-on review or score.
Good for
- Groups who enjoy cooperative team play
- Solo players who like a story mode with varied events
- Mixed-skill groups where everyone can help the team
How Wildlap compares
Team Sonic Racing scores the team. Wildlap is built around individual racing, with drift boosts, items for attack and defence, and kart upgrades you earn yourself.
We make Wildlap. It is a PC kart racer in development, without a release date or public demo yet.
